The Reincarnation of an Individual (1)

A Scholar and A Writer

5 October 2008

This interesting story first appeared on a Chinese blog which claims it is based on a true story. Here is part one translation of its core text:

Ms Wu is a rich woman in China, and recently became a lay disciple of Buddhist Monk Karmawise. One day she went to see her master with her dog, hoping her beloved pet can also be blessed by Buddha. However, when the dog was lead to approach the monk, it passed out from panic.

Monk Karmawise signed, and asked Ms Wu to bring her pet out of the monastery. Immediately after the dog staggered out of the temple gate, it recovered as if nothing had ever happened. Ms Wu was rather puzzled. Instructed her nanny to look after the dog in her car, she returned to seek answer from her master.

Monk Karmawise lingered for a while then told her a story about a Chinese scholar living in the late 19th century.

This scholar was brilliant in his research field but cynical about the world and mean to others. After he died in 1920s, he was reincarnated as a writer and rose to stardom during 40s and 50s with his popular romance novels, which made him quite rich, yet which also landed himself in deep trouble in 60s when the Cultural Revolution began. He was denounced for promoting rotten bourgeoisie mentality, and those who took the lead in condemnation were the ones hurt in their previous lives by the scholar's sharp and cruel words. The writer lost both his status in society and his large savings in bank, and was subsequently sent to a dog farm in remote and freezy region in northeast China.

In the farm, he was further humiliated by people working there, except a young couple who secretly helped him from time to time. However the sympathy from the young couple wasn’t enough to warm his heart, and he evenrually hang himself with a string that was used to tie a dog.

The lost soul of the dead romance writer plunged deep into the hell and found itself wandering in the Town of Quitters where the wind of sorrow and rain of grief blast day and night. After several earth years that is equivalent to billions of billions of hell years, the poor soul got itself unstuck from the gaps between the worlds and climbed back onto the track of the normal process of incarnation. It returned to the human realm in 70s and became the daughter of the young couple.
