About 2500 People in
China Died of Dog Attack Each Year
Another
nine-year old boy died after being bitten
by a family dog, this time it is in
Shanghai. And he is third on the list of
dog attack fatalities in the city this
year.
Some
time earlier the boy’s mother saw a
homeless dog wandering in the street,
dirty and hungry. Feeling pity about its
circumstance, she took it home. When the
boy played with the dog and was bitten at
the toe, no one in the family made a big
fuss of it, until one day the boy
suddenly collapsed. When he was rushed to
hospital, it was all too late. He died of
rabid infection from the dog bite.
As the
number of pet dog in China grows, so does
the number of fatalities from infections
caused by a rabid dog bite, with 2500
cases of death reported each year, more
than that caused by any other contagious
diseases. In the first half of this year,
over 50,000 patients have sought help for
dog-related injuries, which is nearly 20
per cent increase from the previous year.
A fatal
disease of the brain, rabies is caused by
virus that is transferred through the
bites of rabid carnivorous animals, like
wolves, dogs and bloodsucking bats. With
red eyes and saliva dripping from the
mouth, a rabid dog will run around and
bite anything.

When the
rabid dog bites another dog or human, the
virus that lives in its saliva passes
into the body through the biting wound,
and travel along the nerves system to the
brain. The time between the bite and the
first appearance of signs of infection
can be between 2 to 10 weeks, depending
on the distance of the wound from the
brain.
Dogs can
be vaccinated against rabies, but at the
moment the vaccination hasn’t been
widely used, and considering the huge
size of China and the large number of dog
population, it may not be widely
available for a while.
